Jasdeep Singh lets out a loud roar after picking up the wicket of Kieron Pollard Sportzpics

USA rapid bowler Jasdeep Singh stood near the entrance of the mayor’s office in Jersey City, gearing up to attend his honor event in recognition of his contributions to USA’s groundbreaking world cup campaign. However, his arrival was momentarily delayed. He was occupied with a conversation with Michael Klinger, the head of cricket operations at Washington Freedom. Klinger had phoned Jasdeep to extend an invitation to join Freedom for a few matches while Saurabh Netravalkar was on parental leave. Jasdeep was one of two USA cricketers overlooked for an MLC contract in the 2024 season.

Five days after that fortunate call, Jasdeep displayed a stellar performance by outclassing the defending champions and his former team MI New York with his sharp spell of 3 for 14. The 31-year-old unleashed his skills on a pitch vastly different from the one where he was thrashed by Quinton de Kock in his solitary MLC appearance the previous year. In stark contrast, Jasdeep, who himself admitted to having a significant realization after the mauling by de Kock. He has now turned more than 5 kmph quicker as he intensified his weightlifting sessions from 150 lbs to 350 lbs.

“I understood the need to put in more effort. I altered my training routine and approach to my bowling. I realized the necessity to boost my speed. I started dedicating additional hours to my gym workouts. I concentrated on gaining more muscle mass,” mentioned Jasdeep.

Jasdeep bowled aggressively on Tuesday night as he rushed Monank Patel and Dewald Brevis with short deliveries. Monank, who regularly faces Jasdeep in the USA practice sessions, was taken aback by the force with which the ball struck his bat, causing him to lose grip of the bat. Jasdeep hurried Brevis similarly as they mistimed their shots towards mid-on. “I had requested Ricky to allow me to bowl a bouncer or two every over as I was bowling with a wider boundary on the leg side. He promptly agreed and motivated me to execute my strategies,” he added. The Sardar saved his best for the prominent batsman Kieron Pollard. He deceived Pollard with an in-swinger that breached his defenses, leaving Pollard rooted to his crease in disbelief. The resounding roar that ensued seemed more like liberation than jubilation. Liberation from the doubts and skepticism that surrounded him on the day he was excluded from the MLC supplemental draft.

“I recall I was in Barbados for the World Cup when I received the news. It was heart-wrenching. I remember sitting with my wife on the hotel beach at night, contemplating the events unfolding in my life. Self-doubt creeps in. Do I lack something? What am I missing? Self-doubt is the worst feeling to contend with. I believe it can really bring you down. When you’re representing the national team, and you witness all your teammates gearing up for a domestic league, and then you realize you are the only one left out, it hurts immensely.”

Jasdeep was summoned to serve as a net bowler at MI New York’s training camp in Morrisville just before the tournament commenced. Had it not been for the call from Klinger, Jasdeep would have been en route to Canada for a family trip after being on the road for over 2 months. He admits that he had no expectations of being included in the lineup against MI New York until a message from Ricky the night before.

“It was quite unexpected. I was with my USA teammates Monank and Shayan. Monank actually had a hunch that I might play the next day in place of Saurabh. I thought to myself, maybe, or maybe not, as I was just filling in for Saurabh. But a few minutes later, I received a text from Ricky informing me that I was part of the playing eleven. Telepathy!”

“It was a bit surprising. I didn’t anticipate such strong backing from them. Walking in and getting a direct selection. And Ricky messaged me saying congratulations, you are making your debut for Washington Freedom tomorrow. He pulled me aside and remarked, you were absolutely fantastic mate! And those words will always resonate with me, as he also mentioned that you accomplished everything you said you wouldn’t. You went out and delivered on everything you promised!”

“Perhaps it was all fated this way,” expressed Jasdeep. He might need to make way for Netravalkar when he returns for the playoffs, but the unyielding Sardar has finally risen to the occasion dramatically.
