We are currently in the midst of the 9th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 taking place in the United Arab Emirates. A total of 10 teams are competing for the championship, with the final scheduled for 20th October 2024 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, commencing at 7:30 PM IST.
Following the tournament, the New Zealand women’s team, captained by Sophie Devine, will embark on a tour of India for a three-match ODI series, set to take place from 24th to 29th October 2024. All matches will be hosted at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This ODI series will form a part of the ICC Women’s ODI Championship 2022-25.
New Zealand last made a trip to India for a bilateral series back in 2015. During that tour, they lost the ODI series 3-2, but managed to secure victory in the T20I series with a score of 2-1. The upcoming matches are particularly vital for the White Ferns as they aim to improve their standing in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25, where they currently sit 6th with 18 points from 18 games, comprising 8 wins, 8 losses, and two matches abandoned due to weather.

The top five teams from the standings, including the home team (India), will qualify for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, set to be held in India next year in 2025. A successful series for New Zealand would certainly assist them in their quest for qualification for the ODI World Cup next year, while the bottom four teams will need to participate in the qualifiers to secure a spot.
Players involved in the series are expected to miss the initial matches of the historic 10th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), taking place from 27th October to 1st December 2024.
