As the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup commences in the United Arab Emirates on October 3, Jemimah Rodrigues stands ready to play a crucial role in the Indian women’s cricket team’s quest for their first ICC title. Armed with a strong understanding of the game and ample experience, Rodrigues is prepared to tackle any challenge that comes her way.
Rodrigues shared her excitement about the electrifying atmosphere that comes with India-Pakistan matches, emphasizing the significance of this historic rivalry. “I was born in 2000, but the rivalry started long before that. What makes the India-Pakistan game so exciting and competitive is the fans. More than the players, it’s the fans who make it special,” she noted. The intensity of competing in such a high-stakes environment is something she treasures, carrying the weight of helping her team secure a win. “There’s an added responsibility when you’re out there — to make sure Team India wins. That brings out the best in us.”
Reflecting on her standout performance against Pakistan, where she scored 53 runs to guide her team to victory, Rodrigues said, “First and foremost, India won. There’s no better feeling than hitting the winning runs.” She revealed the emotional experience of dedicating her success to her parents in the crowd, stating, “Lifting my bat to them was an unforgettable moment.”
Regarding her approach in the World Cup, Rodrigues highlights the importance of simplicity and adaptability, declaring, “For me, it’s all about assessing the conditions and playing the situation. I just want to keep it simple and do whatever it takes to help the team win.” Her commitment to teamwork is evident as she asserts, “Whenever it comes to the team, I go and give my life out there. That gets me more passionate, energetic, and enthusiastic.” She firmly believes in her team’s collective goal, affirming, “We, as a unit, want Team India to win.”
Rodrigues also commented on the changing landscape of women’s cricket, praising the blend of youth and experience in the current squad. She explained, “Every generation has its own specialty and way of playing. For this team, it’s a mix of absolute youngsters and some like me who have had experience.”
This combination of skills and experience enhances their strategy, with Rodrigues underscoring the significance of togetherness, stating, “This team is special. There’s something in this team, a fire to win, and at the same time, an energy and bond that’s very special. We keep talking about sticking to our processes in team meetings and doing whatever it takes to help Team India win. That’s the entire goal of this team.”
Recollecting her experiences from the 2018 World Cup, she recalled, “In the 2018 World Cup, I remember Smriti playing an outstanding knock. Our team dominated that match, and the way we executed our game plan was incredible. Until then, Australia had always been seen as the dominant team, but we showed what we were capable of.”
Rodrigues also lauded teammate Smriti Mandhana for her wisdom and understanding of the game, stating, “What stands out about Smriti is her maturity. Even though she’s young, she understands the game and her role so well.” She appreciates Mandhana’s ability to engage with players on an individual level, adding, “She doesn’t just tell you to do something her way; she puts herself in your shoes and offers advice that works for you.”
In regard to Harmanpreet Kaur, Rodrigues acknowledged her teammate’s knack for performing under pressure, saying, “Harman di is a big-match player.” The entire team is driven to win not only for India but also for Kaur, who has a deep passion for lifting the trophy. “If I see her lifting the trophy, I know I’ll start crying,” she concluded.
Rodrigues expressed her anticipation for competing against Australia, stressing the importance of bringing their best performance. “I love playing against Australia because you have to bring your A-game. There’s no other option if you want to win.” This fierce rivalry enhances the team’s determination and commitment to their strategies.
She also mentioned her admiration for New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, reflecting on a memorable experience from her earlier cricketing years. “Sophie is a wonderful person and has done so much for New Zealand cricket. I remember watching her hit five sixes in a row at my first Under-19 camp.” Rodrigues holds great respect for Devine’s abilities and has prepared thoroughly for their encounter.
During a warmup match against the West Indies, Rodrigues showcased her skill with a solid 52 runs from 40 balls, significantly aiding India’s total of 141 for 8, leading to a 20-run victory.
Having made her T20 World Cup debut in 2018 with an impressive 59 against New Zealand, Rodrigues has since amassed 339 runs across 15 matches. Her recent achievement of 100 T20I appearances highlights her commitment to the sport, adding to her remarkable record of over 2000 runs and a personal best of 76.
India’s journey begins on October 4 against New Zealand, followed by crucial matches against Pakistan on October 6, Sri Lanka on October 9, and Australia on October 13.
