The path that Georgia Voll has taken to become Cricket Australia’s Women’s Domestic Player of the Year for 2025 is anything but ordinary—it’s a tale of resilience and unexpected turns. As a child, she was infatuated with sports, idolizing rugby league icon Steph Hancock and dreaming of one day wearing the coveted Jillaroos jersey. Cricket was merely a distant thought, a game she had never considered—until a pandemic-induced move to Brisbane opened a door she never knew existed. It was here that she exchanged her rugby ball for a cricket bat, igniting a passion that would light up fields and hearts across Australia.

Fast forward to 2025, and Voll is not only thriving in her newfound love but also serving as an inspiration to countless young girls who aspire to follow in her footsteps. “Inspiring the next generation is my main goal. It’s about how I carry myself on and off the field,” she shared, with a look of determination in her eyes. “Playing for the Australian women’s team has been a dream come true. It feels surreal, really.”

Voll’s journey is a testament to the unwavering support of her family. She fondly remembers her father, who spent countless afternoons pitching balls to her in their backyard, tirelessly helping her refine her skills. Then there’s her mother, who made immense sacrifices, often driving four to five hours a week from Toowoomba to Brisbane for her daughter’s cricket training. These sacrifices were not just logistical; they were emotional investments that showcased her parents’ belief in her potential. It was this foundation—rooted in love and dedication—that enabled Voll to chase her dreams with relentless ambition.

This ambition bore fruit on the grand stage as Australia recently dominated long-time rivals England, achieving a dazzling 16-0 victory in a multi-format series. Voll fondly recounted the excitement of being a part of this historic moment, which felt even more thrilling as it unfolded at home, where her cricket journey first began back in 2020 when she debuted for Queensland. In just her second One Day International, she made headlines by scoring a remarkable century off just 84 balls—an achievement that ignited her determination to remain part of the remarkable Australian squad.

“My priority is to keep performing well at the domestic level. When I get the chance to put on the Australian colors, I promise to give it everything I’ve got,” she stated with sincerity.

Recently, she made waves when she scored an unbeaten 99 runs for the UP Warriorz against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, unfortunately falling just short of becoming the first centurion in the tournament’s history. Her skill and promise have not gone unnoticed; former rugby league coach Lisa Croft observed, “Georgia has always shown natural leadership. She has this innate ability to strategize and bring the girls together.”

Croft emphasizes the significance of visibility in women’s sports. With athletes like Voll stepping into the limelight, young girls now have relatable role models to look up to. As someone who has devoted her life to teaching, she is heartened by the idea that these role models can inspire a new generation of players, perhaps even laying the groundwork for future leaders like Voll in Australia’s cricket landscape.

“I just focus on working hard and letting my performances speak for themselves,” Voll stated, reflecting on the expectations and aspirations surrounding her burgeoning career.

With commentators dubbing her as Australia’s next big cricket star, she remains humble yet hopeful. “I know I have a long way to go and a lot to prove,” she added earnestly.

In what has been a breakout season, Voll’s desire for more batting opportunities led her to switch from Brisbane Heat to Sydney Thunder for the 2024/25 Women’s Big Bash League season. This strategic move paid dividends as she shone, accumulating 330 runs over 12 innings. One of her standout moments came when she played a blistering innings of 97 not out, a performance that showcased her dynamic stroke play and enviable adaptability.

So far, her brief international career has seen her make quite the impression. In December 2024, she was drafted as a replacement for the injured Alyssa Healy during Australia’s ODI series against India. Her debut was nothing less than spectacular; she remained unbeaten on 46 runs—a sign of her burgeoning potential. Yet it was her second ODI at Allan Border Field that made cricket history, as she scored an outstanding 101 runs off just 87 balls, solidifying her as a rising star at the international level.

With each passing match, Georgia Voll is cementing her place not just as a player but as a guiding light for young girls everywhere. Her journey reminds us that dreams can take unexpected paths, and when we pursue them passionately, anything is possible. As Voll continues to blaze a trail in women’s cricket, she embodies resilience, and ambition, and stands as a testament to what can happen when support meets determination.

The sky’s the limit for Georgia Voll, and she’s just getting started.
