The Chairperson of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Jay Shah, revealed an important advancement in women’s international cricket with the establishment of the first-ever Women’s Under-19 T20 Asia Cup. This newly formed tournament will occur biennially, acting as crucial preparation for the U-19 T20 World Cup, with its first edition set for later this year in November.

This resolution was reached during the ACC Executive Board assembly, overseen by Jay Shah, who is scheduled to assume the position of International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman on December 1. The gathering occurred in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As part of an ICC initiative, the first edition of the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup was held in 2023.

This initiative represents a major milestone in enhancing the visibility of women’s cricket within the region, fostering its growth, and expanding its international audience. The ACC has, for the first time, presented a clearly defined pathway for aspiring young female cricketers, emphasizing its robust dedication to advocating gender equality and cultivating cricketing talent at all levels.

Jay Shah underscored the significance of launching the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup as a transformative moment for cricket in Asia. This competition seeks to offer young female cricketers a crucial platform for developing their abilities and demonstrating their skills at a competitive standard.

Traditionally, women’s cricket has not enjoyed the same degree of organization and opportunities as men’s cricket, particularly at the junior level. By establishing a dedicated U-19 tournament, the ACC is making a vital stride toward bridging that divide, enabling rising players to acquire essential experience, visibility, and acknowledgment on a broader platform.

“Today signifies a crucial juncture for cricket in Asia. The initiation of the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup stands as a significant accomplishment, furnishing a vital platform for young women cricketers to advance their skills and exhibit their capabilities. This venture fortifies the future of women’s cricket in Asia, and we take pride in the enduring impact that these choices will engender, not just within our member nations but across the global cricketing sphere,” Jay Shah declared.
