The 14th over delivered by Deepti Sharma during the match against New Zealand on Friday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium was filled with significant drama.
After hitting the ball to Harmanpreet Kaur positioned at long off, Amelia Kerr proceeded to complete a single. Delighted with her run, she was unaware that her captain, Sophie Devine, who was at the opposite end, was eager for a second run. Devine’s push prompted Kaur to throw the ball to the wicketkeeper’s end, resulting in Richa Ghosh running out Kerr, who failed to make her ground.
Kerr began to walk off the field, but the reserve umpire instructed her to wait. Subsequent discussions involving Kaur, the on-field umpires, and numerous replays of the preceding play led the umpires to allow Kerr to return. Meanwhile, India’s head coach Amol Muzumdar was seen engaged in a lively conversation with the officials, although ultimately, the situation did not favor the Women in Blue.
In one replay, an umpire was notably seen returning Deepti’s cap, indicating that a “Call of Over” had been made. According to cricket law, once this call is issued, the ball is deemed dead, preventing any further actions.
Though Indian supporters felt disheartened, it can confidently be concluded that the correct decision was reached.
